Our 3-day Introduction to Ski Touring course is designed for experienced resort skiers looking to be introduced to Australia’s stunning backcountry. You’ll spend your days immersed in accessible alpine terrain, learning essential skills for safe and enjoyable ski touring, all while returning to the comfort of town each night.

This course concludes in Jindabyne each evening, allowing participants to return to their own accommodations, which are not included in the course.

Backcountry touring requires adaptability, and this course embraces a flexible itinerary to account for the dynamic nature of weather and snow conditions in the Australian backcountry. You’ll be involved in this process, learning not only how to plan effectively but how to adjust to the ever-changing alpine environment.

This course is perfect for those who want to dip their toes into backcountry skiing without the commitment of overnight camping in the backcountry. This 3 day course will teach you the skills necessary to:

  • Select and prepare backcountry ski gear
  • Master basic techniques for ‘skinning up’ and ‘skiing down’
  • Interpret weather forecasts and understand alpine weather risks
  • Recognise and assess avalanche hazards
  • Navigate confidently using alpine navigation tools
  • Plan safe and enjoyable day trips in the backcountry
  • Ski with a light pack

Course prerequisites:

  • Must be physically fit, free of injury and be able to carry a day pack for long periods of time in varying weather conditions
  • Have proven resort or off-piste skiing experience and be fully competent
  • Be over the age of 18
  • Regularly participate in outdoor recreation activities and be able to source the mandatory personal equipment for this course
